Patterns. Firstly, it would be beneficial to explain the type of patterns that I'll be talking about in this blog. Patterns, in this context, are repeated behavioural or affective sequences and they can have a great impact on your everyday life. You can be aware of your patterns or they can be occurring on a subconscious level. Some common patterns people experience are things like avoidance of intimacy, frequent angry outbursts, addictive behavious, frequent lying, or surrounding yourself with people who constantly take advantage of you. Regardless of the pattern, it's important to become aware of it first so that it can be addressed.
Have you ever stood back and observed your patterns? Have you ever asked for feedback about yourself from someone you can trust and who supports you? At some point in time, it's important to take inventory of your patterns as this can be the first step towards positive growth. (Disclaimer) Should you feel this process requires additional support seek out a support person, counsellor or psychologist who can walk with you during it. Also, you may find it beneficial to journal about the process.
Now don't get me wrong, not all patterns are bad, and observing and noting positive patterns in your life is just as important. Positive patterns can be things such as seeking out supportive and loyal people, asserting yourself in adversity, stopping and assessing situations before acting, protecting vulnerable people, using spiritual resources, or valuing healthy daily routines.
So I encourage you to take stock of both the patterns that are supporting your wellbeing and those that are hindering it, having this knowledge can be powerful and a step towards a better you.
